Richard to remove a couple of Velux windows and install a Velux Cabrio window for me
“I wanted Richard to remove a couple of Velux windows and install a Velux Cabrio window – the type that becomes a balcony once fully opened. He even included a little step up to the balcony area which made our viewing platform even better. Richard’s work was impeccable. And he left the site clean every day. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Richard again. ..and he’s a lovely bloke!“
Says Tim Price, Brighton, 2022

These windows are only meant for escape use, with side hung brackets and handle for easy use. Richard upgraded this roof window in an empty loft in a tall Brighton building in the top floor flat. Lots of head height in this loft conversion
The minimum height for a loft conversion is 2.2m. This will give you enough space to install the floor and leave you with the minimum practical ceiling height of 1.9m. Any doubts Richard is happy to answer these questions. Most lofts can be converted, if not there are other ideas.

“most importantly He is very professional and easy to work with”
“This is the second loft that Rich has converted for me, and I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Rich should we move again and need a loft converting. He does a great job, managing all the sub contractors very well, but most importantly he is very professional and easy to work with. Discussing details, explaining what is being done and providing sound advice for the next phases brings far more to the job than a contractor just following the plan. Rich uses his experience to provide guidance on how to make the best out of the space you have to convert. We are extremely happy with the results, of what was a complex and challenging conversion of an entire loft space of a detached property, that also required structural support from the ground floor of the house.” Says: Matt and Jo Long, Brighton

A loft conversion can be built anytime of the year
Anytime, is a good time to build a loft, winter or summer. Most clients would like a conversion built in Autumn for a Christmas deadline so why not try January, February and March when the construction business is quieter.

Most good carpenters can build a loft conversion
Loft conversion carpenters, tend to be specialists
This is due to the complexities of the building process e.g. combining steel, timber and roofing disciplines. Knowledge of building regulations is vital.

Insulation fixed to the inside walls in our Victorian flat to stop condensation
It makes sense to insulate our house walls as we insulate our lofts
Condensation (hot air from cooking and bathing onto cold walls) in the winter is a real problem, living with mouldy walls, clothes and furniture is not fun. It’s uneconomic to have the heating on all day and so the outer solid walls never warm up. After lots of research we decided to warm up our problem walls by insulating them.
I fixed plasterboard with foam insulation attached directly to the walls and decorate. At 50mm thick it is the current building regulations standard, also increasing our properties energy rating. My wife also said it hides that nasty old plasterwork.
Now we have our furniture up close to the walls and no more mould. PLUS the rooms warm up quicker and we have been able to turn down the boiler temperature, by half.
It makes sense to insulate our house walls as we insulate our lofts. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with ask any questions.
Airflow (another blog to come). We would also recommend heat recovery unit.

You can check yourself by measuring the floor of your loft to the apex of your roof and this measurement is more than 7ft 6″ (2.3 metres, 90″ or 230cms) then you have a good chance of gaining the extra space you require. A consultation visit is FREE, I can help you with a ball park figure and ideas of how to get maximum space for your conversion.

It may do if your house is in a conservation area
Most lofts don’t need planning permission. Have a look at this government planning portal website. If planning permission is needed, my architectural services team will be able to advise you. The roof of this house was extended considerably and did not require any planning permission.

Dormer loft conversion built by Jackson Loft Conversion Brighton East Sussex
A loft conversion takes between 6 to 8 weeks to build
I am always asked this question and of course it varies on the size of your house. If it were an average, 3 bedroom terraced house, a dormer loft conversion including a master bedroom and with an en-suite bathroom, this would take between 6 to 8 weeks.
