“Richard completed the job of installing two new Velux windows in my loft so efficiently and skilfully. He certainly knows his craft very well.. and though he had only come for the windows. I knew from talking to him that he had skill and knowledge way beyond into carpentry. I wish I had met him before I had started converting the loft. I would not hesitate to get him back for some other major jobs. As a serious DIYer I was considering installing the windows myself, but then I came across Richard. He was so knowledgeable, professional, straightforward and with a very fair price and had excellent suggestions of where I could source the windows from, I thought why mess about and I booked him. I am so glad I did.”

Richard Jackson installs top hung Velux window in Henfield
Their is a choice of top hung or the conventional centre pivot. e.g. hinged in the middle. Top hung windows provide more head height when open in your loft conversion. The top hung Velux window has its handle at the bottom, some people may find this easier to use. The centre pivot window is more economic and has its handle at the top.
Velux roof windows are a great quality choice and they are the market leaders.
Side hung escape window installed by Richard Jackson
These windows are only meant for escape use, with side hung brackets and handle for easy use. Richard upgraded this roof window in an empty loft in a tall Brighton building in the top floor flat. These windows can be forgotten about but once their life span is over they may leak and course lots of damage below.

From leaking old plastic roof to dry, warm and light from a Velux
Lots of small extensions, conservatories and porches have plastic roofs and this was the cheapest solution for the short term. But once they become old and leaky it’s time to replace them with tiles to match your existing roof and it will last much longer.
It will look smart, keep you dry and will be insulated against the cold. Add a Veluxe or skylight for extra light and ventilation. Also insulating the internal walls will help with any condensation.

It is about 2.1 metres / 210 cm / 7 feet / 84 inches for a loft conversion
If you can stand up in your loft you are doing well. Don’t be shy, measure the height with a tape measure. The ridge is the centre point of your roof, this will be where you measure from and down to your feet.
If your attic loft is under 6 foot and you are unable to stand up, your loft conversion will struggle to pass building regulations.
Richard will double check the height of your attic loft on his FREE ESTIMATE visit to you.

An experienced carpenter can build your loft conversion
A carpenter (see Wikipedia) is one of the oldest professions, they build wooden structures and I am very proud to be one. Carpentry also involves engineering as well as problem solving. There are different aspects:
A 1st fix carpenter builds the structure of a house, extension or roof.
A 2nd fix carpenter finishes of a project, hanging doors, fits skirtings, architrave and staircases.

“most importantly He is very professional and easy to work with”
“This is the second loft that Rich has converted for me, and I wouldn’t hesitate to work with Rich should we move again and need a loft converting. He does a great job, managing all the sub contractors very well, but most importantly he is very professional and easy to work with. Discussing details, explaining what is being done and providing sound advice for the next phases brings far more to the job than a contractor just following the plan. Rich uses his experience to provide guidance on how to make the best out of the space you have to convert. We are extremely happy with the results, of what was a complex and challenging conversion of an entire loft space of a detached property, that also required structural support from the ground floor of the house.” Says: Matt and Jo Long, Brighton

“Communications, was very professional in his approach” says Peter
“Rich worked with us over summer 2018 on our loft conversion, a complicated job which involved lowering our existing ceilings. His ideas and input at the start were invaluable in getting the project off the ground, when we were unsure as to whether or not it would be possible. Once work commenced, Rich was very responsive in terms of communications, was very professional in his approach, and the standard of his work was excellent throughout. We would have no hesitation in recommending him!”

A loft conversion takes between 6 to 8 weeks to build
I am always asked this question and of course it varies on the size of your house. If it were an average, 3 bedroom terraced house, a Dormer loft conversion including a master bedroom and with an en-suite bathroom, this would take between 6 to 8 weeks.
A Velux or eves loft conversion in an average 3 bedroom terraced house with a master bedroom and an en-suite bathroom would take between 5 to 6 weeks.

This large roof loft conversion extension provided enough space for two bedrooms and a shower room. The design of loft conversion changed a bungalow into a good sized house.
The side ‘hip’ roof was extended to create a gable end. This also had a traditional sussex barn end detail. A large rear box dormer was built to accommodate the shower room. A Velux window was positioned over the new staircase and now floods the new hallway in light.
The position of the staircase was critical to the success of this project. A non load bearing wall was removed and a small amount of space was taken from the spare room to accommodate the new loft conversion staircase.
